Detailed description of Deerfield Golf & Tennis Club

Deerfield Golf & Tennis Club, the former private Louviers Country Club, is a public 18 hole golf course located in Newark, Delaware. The course is a part of the Delaware Division of Parks and Recreation.

Deerfield Golf & Tennis Club first opened for play in 1955. The course was designed by William F. Gordon.

Built in 1955 by the DuPont Corporation for its employees, the club was called Louviers Country Club. In 1994 MBNA purchased the club from DuPont and built the new clubhouse ballroom and recreational building, renaming it Deerfield Golf & Tennis Club. In 2005 the state of Delaware acquired the 145-acre property to protect the land from development. The club is part of Delaware’s White Clay Creek State Park supervised by the Delaware Division of Parks and Recreation. Deerfield Golf & Tennis Club opened to the public on April 14, 2006.

Deerfield Golf & Tennis Club, owned by the State of Delaware, is now open for all to enjoy! Overlooking the majesty of White Clay Creek State Park, this is the home of incredible public golf. From1955 this natural golf treasure had been private – only a select few have ever experienced this level of golf experience.

Par for the course is 70. From the back tees the course plays to 6,323 yards. From the foward tees the course plays to 5,348 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 10, a par-5 that plays to 526 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 11, a par-3 that plays to 158 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 9, a 418 yard par-4 uphill dogleg right. #9 is not only the most difficult of the par 4's, it's the #1 handicap hole on the course. Here, the golfer is faced with a tee shot that must favor the left side of the fairway to have a clear approach to the green. The firm surface of this small green will call for an extremely accurate long iron or fairway wood. Navigating the subtle slopes to the green will be the real challenge for all golfers. A par on the ninth hole is an excellent score for any skill level.

The easiest hole is # 11, the 158 yard par-3. Adding an extra club to your tee shot on this uphill par 3 is the key to being on the green with your tee shot. Staying clear of the bunkers left of the green is the top priority. The chipping area both short and right of the green provides a good opportunity to save par. Whether you hit the green with your first or second shot, be sure to leave yourself an uphill putt on this slippery green.

Would travel: 30-60 Miles, Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, Better than average course for the area, Fair priced based on quality and competitive area pricing
